What Is Digital Signage?
A screen that shows scheduled, remotely-updated content — the short version, and the parts that actually matter.
Digital signage is a screen — a TV, a monitor, anything with an HDMI port — connected to a small computer (the "player") that shows content you manage remotely, on a schedule, without anyone touching the screen itself. A restaurant's menu board, a gym's class schedule, a lobby display cycling through announcements — all digital signage.
How it's different from just plugging a laptop into a TV
You could absolutely put a laptop behind a TV and loop a slideshow. The reason businesses use signage software instead comes down to three things:
- Remote updates. Change what's on screen from anywhere, without walking up to the device — swap a promotion, fix a typo, push new content to every screen in a chain at once.
- Scheduling. Different content at different times — breakfast menu until 11am, lunch after, a happy-hour promotion on Fridays — without anyone manually switching files.
- Reliability at scale. A laptop-and-slideshow setup falls over the moment it crashes, loses power, or the file gets deleted by mistake. Signage software is built to run unattended for months and recover on its own after a reboot.
What a signage setup actually needs
- A screen. Any TV or monitor with HDMI works — you don't need a "commercial display," though those exist for 24/7 heavy-use cases.
- A player device. Something that runs the signage software and drives the screen — could be a cheap Android box, a Raspberry Pi, or a spare Windows/Mac/Linux machine. See setting up a screen for under $200 for real hardware options.
- Signage software. The part that lets you build layouts, schedule content, and manage every screen from one place — this is the actual product decision. See the buyer's checklist for what to look for.
What it costs
Software is typically priced per screen per month, anywhere from a few dollars to well over $20/screen depending on the platform and tier. Hardware is usually a one-time cost per screen. See the full pricing guide for how to compare offers properly.
