Split screen digital signage.
Divide one screen into zones, give each zone its own playlist, and let them run on their own schedules.
Several things on one screen, each on its own timetable
A single full-screen slideshow works, but most real screens need more than one thing at once: the menu stays up while a promo video plays beside it; the class timetable stays visible while announcements rotate; a banner along the bottom carries the opening hours.
CastWize does this with zone layouts. A layout divides the screen into rectangular zones. Each zone plays its own playlist and has its own schedule rules, so the left side can switch from breakfast to lunch at 11:00 while the right side keeps looping the same promo video all day.
Two layouts are built in: Full Screen and Main + Ticker (a main area with a strip along the bottom). For anything else, you draw your own layout in the zone editor: add zones, drag and resize them, name them, and choose a landscape, portrait or ultra-wide shape.
Who uses split screens
Restaurants and cafés
Menu in the main zone, specials or a promo video beside it, opening hours along the bottom.
Clinics and waiting rooms
Health information rotating in one zone, a queue "now serving" number and a clock in another.
Offices and schools
Announcements, a published calendar and the weather on one corridor screen.
How to split a screen into zones in CastWize
- 1
Create a layout
In Studio, open Zone Layouts and create a new layout. Pick the screen shape: Landscape (16:9), Portrait (9:16) or Ultra-wide (21:9).
- 2
Draw the zones
Add zones, drag them into place and resize them (down to 5% of the screen). Give each one a name like Menu, Promo or Banner, then save.
- 3
Apply it to a screen
Open the screen, choose the layout, and pick a playlist for each zone.
- 4
Add schedule rules per zone
Each zone can have its own day and time rules, so one zone changes at lunchtime while another stays the same.
- 5
Review and publish
Studio lists exactly what will change on the screen before you publish. Publish, and the screen switches to the new layout within seconds.
What a zone can hold
- Anything a slide can hold
- Images, video, text, web pages, live HLS streams and widgets such as a clock, QR code, weather or YouTube.
- Its own playlist and timing
- Zones don't wait for each other: a 10-second image slideshow and a 45-second video run side by side.
- Portrait screens
- Choose the portrait shape; on a TV mounted on its side, the player rotates a portrait layout to fill it.
- Reusable layouts
- Save a layout once and apply it to every screen in a location or across your whole account.
Requirements and limits
- Zone layouts work on every CastWize player: Android, Windows, Mac, Linux and Raspberry Pi.
- Zones are rectangles positioned in percentages of the screen, so the same layout fits any resolution of the same shape.
- Each zone plays video muted, like the rest of the player.
- On a Raspberry Pi, several video zones at once can stutter because video is decoded in software; images and text are fine.
- A ticker zone is a strip like any other zone: it shows slides, it doesn't scroll text by itself.
